In 2009, Nandan Nilekani took on the monumental task of designing and implementing Aadhaar, the world’s largest biometric identity system, as the founding Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Aadhaar was conceptualised as a means to provide every Indian citizen with a unique identification number, facilitating access to government services and welfare schemes. Despite scepticism, Nilekani’s expertise in technology and project management helped transform Aadhaar into a cornerstone of India’s digital infrastructure, now benefiting over 1.4 billion citizens.

The Aadhaar system has enabled direct benefit transfers, streamlining subsidy disbursements and eliminating intermediaries, thereby reducing corruption. It has also been pivotal in promoting financial inclusion, with over 400 million Jan Dhan accounts linked to Aadhaar, ensuring that marginalised communities can access banking and credit services.

Beyond Aadhaar, Nilekani has played a significant role in the development of IndiaStack, an open digital infrastructure powering services like digital signatures, document verification, and payments. One of its key components, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), has revolutionised India’s digital payment landscape by enabling seamless real-time transactions. As of 2023, UPI processes over 10 billion transactions monthly, making it one of the most successful digital payment systems globally.

Nilekani’s contributions to Digital India reflect his ability to integrate cutting-edge technology into governance, bridging gaps between the state, businesses, and citizens. His vision has set a benchmark for large-scale digital transformation in developing economies.

Change Maker Nandan Nilekani

His philanthropic ventures through the Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies focus on critical areas such as education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and civic empowerment. Notable initiatives include funding water conservation programmes and promoting digital learning tools in underserved communities, which align with his belief in scalable, technology-driven solutions.

One of Nilekani’s most ambitious advocacy efforts is his support for the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a government-backed initiative designed to level the playing field for small businesses in the e-commerce space. By creating an open, interoperable platform, ONDC aims to reduce the dominance of large corporations and provide small retailers with tools to compete effectively in the digital marketplace. This aligns with Nilekani’s vision of democratising access to technology, empowering millions of small and medium enterprises across India.

Nilekani also emphasises gender and socio-economic inclusivity, encouraging diverse participation in the tech industry and supporting initiatives that bridge digital divides. His focus on empowering communities underscores his vision of creating a society where access to opportunities is not limited by geography, gender, or economic status.

His advocacy for data-driven governance and open-source technology platforms has influenced public policy, fostering collaboration between governments, businesses, and tech communities. He regularly mentors start-ups, advising them on scalability, sustainability, and leveraging technology to solve societal challenges.

Nilekani’s emphasis on AI and data ethics positions him as a global thought leader, advocating for the responsible use of technology to tackle critical issues such as climate change, healthcare accessibility, and urban planning.
